Obeidi, who is 28 years old and unmarried, says she was picked up at a checkpoint because her ID card said she was from the east, where the rebellion against Gadhafi was born. She says they were trying to punish her for what was happening there. She and another woman were taken to a house, she says, where there were a lot of men. "I was fighting them off so much that they tied my legs and arms together. They were drinking a lot, and they would spill the alcohol in my eyes," Obeidi says. "And they would kick my head with their boots." She says the men would come in groups of three and repeatedly rape her. But according to Obeidi, the ringleader was a man she recognized — the son of a government minister. She says he was the most brutal.
"I want my freedom," she says. "I want my family."

On March 26, 2011, a Libyan woman named Eman al-Obaidi stormed into the Rixos Hotel in Tripoli, where many members of the international press are staying, in order to alert foreign reporters that Gaddafi's troops had repeatedly raped her at a checkpoint where she was detained for two days. She was brutally dragged away by hotel staff and government minders after attempts to gag her. Despite her release, government officials continue to attempt to silence her story.

  An oasis of freedom for women is undergoing a rebirth in the capital city.
  Some say this fabled eight-acre enclosure in the Shahrara neighborhood of Kabul goes back to the days of Babur the Conqueror, in the 1500s. More reliably it is dated to the 1940s or ’50s, when King Zahir Shah was said to have bequeathed it to the state. Karima Salik tells the story of the Kabul Women’s Garden she remembers as a girl in the 1970s, a halcyon age for Afghanistan and its women, before the present 32 years of unbroken war began. Ms. Salik’s childhood witnessed one of the most liberated periods for women in Afghan history, when the communist government took over in 1978 and enforced equality, banned the burqa and mandated education for girls. The revolt of the mujahedeen, led by conservative, rural warlords, wiped that all out in a few years’ time.

Joumana Haddad, 38 Jahre alt, Herausgeberin und Chefredakteurin des ersten erotischen Magazins im Nahen Osten, fällt längst nicht mehr herein auf die glitzernde Fassade und Freizügigkeit Beiruts. "Nur, weil eine Frau einen Minirock tragen darf, heißt das nicht, dass sie emanzipiert ist", sagt sie. "Wir leben in der arabischen Welt, und obwohl wir hier in Beirut so tun, als wären wir eine Ausnahme, herrschen überall Doppelmoral und Heuchelei."  ....  Als im Dezember 2008 die erste Ausgabe von Jasad auf den Markt kam, brach im Libanon eine heftige Kontroverse aus. Religiöse Frauenverbände und islamische Gruppen versuchen bis heute, ein Verbot zu erreichen. Auf der Beiruter Buchmesse im vergangenen Jahr versuchten Mitglieder der militanten Islamistenbewegung Hisbollah, Joumana Haddads Stand zu schließen... Beirut bleibt der einzige Ort im Nahen Osten, wo es denkbar ist, ein Magazin mit erotischem Inhalt herauszubringen. Konservative Moralvorstellungen mögen das Privatleben regeln, die staatliche Zensur dagegen greift in die kulturelle Produktion nur selten ein. Doch auch Beirut ändert sich. Radikale Kräfte gewinnen an Einfluss, in den verarmten Vororten haben Extremistengruppen Zulauf, und die Hisbollah ist politisch und militärisch längst die mächtigste Partei im Libanon. Die traditionelle Liberalität Beiruts könnte bedroht sein, fürchtet Joumana Haddad. "Unglücklicherweise", sagt sie, "verlieren wir ständig Boden." Dann hebt sie den Kopf und fügt hinzu: "Doch ich glaube an die Macht der Minderheit. Wann ist sozialer Wandel je von einer Bevölkerungsmehrheit ausgegangen?"

As women increasingly earn college degrees in higher numbers than men, at some point "you would expect in about 50 percent of marriages the women would earn more than the man," said David Denslow, an economics professor at the University of Florida. The economic crisis has accelerated this trend, as roughly 75percent of the 7 million jobs lost in the "mancession" belonged to men, whose jobless rate in January was 10 percent compared with 7.9 percent for women, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, the majority of women still earn just 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. ... In fact, the percentage of men who do most or an equal share of cooking rose to 56 percent in 2008 from 34 percent in 1992, according to the Families and Work Institute. A 16-year-old Bangladeshi girl was who raped 8 months ago was given 101 lashes as punishment for having conceived during the assault, Bangladesh's Daily Star reports. Meanwhile, the paper notes, the alleged rapist received no punishment. The village elders who issued the fatwa against the girl also fined the girl's father and warned him that his family would be forced into isolation if they didn't pay. According to the Telegraph, the girl was so ashamed that she did not lodge a complaint about her attack. (HP, 1/26/2010). Three women were whipped as a result of fatwas in the district during the last six months.

A Saudi court sentenced a journalist, Rozanna al-Yami, 22, on Saturday to 60 lashes after she was charged with involvement in a television show in which a Saudi man talked about sex... In the program, broadcast in July on the Lebanese satellite channel LBC, the Saudi man, Mazen Abdul-Jawad, described his active sex life and showed sex toys, which the station blurred. The same court sentenced Mr. Abdul-Jawad to five years in prison and 1,000 lashes. (NYT, 10/24/2009). Abdul Jawad, a 32-year-old airline employee and divorced father of four, spoke openly about his sexual escapades, his love of sex and losing his virginity at age 14 on "A Thick Red Line." That episode caused an uproar in deeply conservative Saudi Arabia, where Shariah, or Islamic law, is practiced. Premarital sex is illegal, and unrelated men and women are not permitted to mingle. (CNN). Three male friends who appeared on the show with him got two-year terms and 300 lashes each.(guardian.co.uk, Monday 26 October 2009).

The UN Security Council has expressed serious concern at the imposition of a new period of house arrest on Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The European Union extended its sanctions on Burma. The EU said judges involved in Ms Suu Kyi's sentencing would now join military and government figures in having their overseas assets frozen and travel to the EU banned. Ms Suu Kyi was found guilty because she allowed an American man, John Yettaw, to stay at her lakeside home after he swam there uninvited in May. She was sentenced to three years in prison but the term was commuted to 18 months house arrest, ensuring the opposition leader cannot take in planned elections next year. Ms Suu Kyi, 64, has spent 14 of the past 20 years under house arrest. (BBC, 13.8.09).

The Sudanese authorities released journalist Lubna Ahmed Hussein yesterday from the Omdurman Women's Prison after the Sudanese Journalist Union paid the fine that was issued by the Khartoum courts. In a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat, Lubna Hussein revealed that she had not wanted the Sudanese Journalist Union to pay her fine and secure her release. She said "I thank him [Tetawi] for his visit but not for paying the fine."(Asharq Al-Awsat, 09.09.09)
Lubna Hussein was among 13 women arrested July 3 in a raid by members of the public order police force on a popular Khartoum cafe for wearing trousers, considered indecent by the strict interpretation of Islamic law adopted by Sudan's Islamic regime. All but three of the women were flogged at a police station two days later. "This is not a case about me wearing pants," said Hussein, who works in the media department of the U.N. Mission in Sudan and contributes opinion pieces to a left-leaning Khartoum newspaper. (HP, 29.7.09)

The police arrested 13 women in a raid on a cafe in the capital, Khartoum, and flogged 10 of them in public for wearing trousers, one of those arrested said Monday. The women were detained Friday by officers of the public order police, which enforces Sudan’s strict Islamic law in public places. One of those arrested, Lubna Hussein, a journalist, said she was challenging the charges, which can be punishable by up to 40 lashes. “I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said. (NYT, 07/13/09).

Wearing pants in public could land a famed Sudanese journalist 40 lashes for violating public morality, Al Arabiya TV said Tuesday, prompting the journalist to send out 500 invitations to her possible flogging in a bid to expose human rights violations.
Leftist Lubna al-Hussein, who works at the Sudanese newspaper al-Sahafa and with the U.N. mission in Sudan, could be sentenced to 40 lashes for dressing up "indecently."
On July 3 she was arrested with several other girls at a celebration hall that had 300-400 guests. "Two cops came in and asked all girls who wear pants to follow them to the police station," Hussein, who wears the hijab, head scarf, told Al Arabiya TV.
Lubna Hussein, a Sudanese reporter whose column for the popular Arabic newspaper Al-Sahafa, “Men Talk,” regularly criticizes Islamic fundamentalists and the Sudanese government, was sentenced to 40 lashes for the crime of “wearing pantaloons.” (mediaite, 07/14/09).
Hussein and two other women chose to go to trial. On Monday, she was summoned for questioning and now she awaits a decision from the prosecutor on when the case could go to trial. (examiner, 07/13/09)

Amnesty International, Malaysian lawyers and some politicians have condemned the sentence, while other critics have warned it would tarnish Malaysia's image as a moderate country. Islamic officials have defended it as necessary to uphold Islamic values. Islamic morality police — enforcement officials of the Islamic Religious Department — arrested Kartika in a raid for drinking beer at a hotel lounge at a beach resort in Cherating in Pahang state in December 2007. Kartika was sentenced to six lashes of a rattan cane by the Shariah court last month in what was considered a warning to other Muslims to abide by religious rules. Kartika is the first woman in Muslim-majority Malaysia to face caning for drinking beer was reprieved Monday because of the holy month of Ramadan. (yahoo, 24.8.099).

Women in Iran face widespread discrimination under the law. They are excluded from key areas of the state – they cannot, for example, be judges or stand for the presidency. They do not have equal rights with men in marriage, divorce, child custody and inheritance. Criminal harm suffered by a woman is less severely punished than the same harm suffered by a man. Evidence given by women in court is worth half that given by a man. Although the legal age for marriage is 13, fathers can apply for permission to arrange that their daughters are married at a younger age – and to men much older than their daughters. Men are allowed to practice polygamy, women are not. Men have an incontestable right in law to divorce their spouse. Women do not.

The concept of male surrogate and guardianship of females is one of the main pillars of Islamic Fundamentalism in Iran. Iranian women are not free to choose or control various aspects of their lives. Evidence of such state-sponsor of violence against women is seen in Iran's penal and civil codes. Here is the worst:
Article 102 of the Penal code, states that married offenders (adulterers) are liable to stoning regardless of their gender, but the method laid down for a man stipulates he be buried up to his waist, and a woman up to her neck.
Article 114 of Iran's Penal codes states: When stoning is being administered on a man he must be placed in a pit almost down to his waist, and when administered on a woman she must be placed in a pit almost down to her chest.
Such barbaric behavior by the regime includes dictating the style, size and the administration of stoning while differentiating between male vs. female victims. Female victim up to her neck to avoid physical escape, however, even if condemned female victim is able to flee the scene, authorities are obliged to arrest her and execute her by firing squad. As for the male victims, they are buried up to their waist and if able to escape the scene no further punishment awaits them.

Under Article 102 of Iran's Penal Code, a girl who is found to have committed acts incompatible with chastity is sentenced to stoning. On the day of her punishment, the girl's hands are tied behind her back as she becomes completely covered from head to toe in winding sheets and is placed seated in a pit.  The pit is then filled up to her chest with dirt and the dirt is tamped down.  At that point, people are invited to murder her by hurling rocks at her.  But to ensure the maximum amount of pain and torture, the Iranian government has even mandated the size of the stones that are to be used in this barbaric act of public execution!  By law, the stones must not be too small as to prevent ultimate death, nor must they be too large that they could cause the girl's death "too soon."

"What affects me most, as an Algerian secularist, is that Obama has not done away with the idea of homogeneous civilisations that was at the heart of the theory of the ’clash of civilisations’. Moreover, his very American idea of civilisation is that it can be equated to religion. In short ’the West’ is composed of countries, while ’Islam’ is not....Unfortunately, this essentializing Islam feeds into the plans of Muslim fundamentalists whose permanent claim is that there is one single Islam - their version of it -, one homogeneous Muslim world, and subsequently one single Islamic law that needs to be respected by all in the name of religious rights....Where is the place for secularists in Obama’s discourse? For their democratic right to vote laws rather than be imposed laws in the name of God? For their human right to believe or not to believe, to practice or not to practice? They simply do not exist. They are ignored. They are made invisible. They are made ’Muslims’ . Not just by our oppressive undemocratic governments - by Obama too…In this religious straight jacket, women’s rights are limited to their right to education - and Obama distances himself from arrogant westerners by making it clear that women’s covering is not seen by him as an obstacle to their emancipation. Especially, if it is ’their choice’… Meanwhile, Iran is next door, with its morality police that jails women whose hair slips out of the said-covering, in the name of religious laws… And what about Afghanistan or Algeria where women were abducted, tortured, raped, mutilated, burnt alive, killed for not covering? Obviously, Obama trades women’s human rights for political and economic alliances with ’Islam’… ’Islam’ definitely owns oil, among other things."

Wafa Sultan has become The Muslim Who Spoke Out. In her now famous debate with Dr. Ibrahim Al-Khouli on Al-Jazeera (aired on February 21, 2006), the Syrian-born psychologist kicked some serious ass. A sample excerpt:

It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality. It is a clash between freedom and oppression, between democracy and dictatorship. It is a clash between human rights, on the one hand, and the violation of these rights, on other hand. It is a clash between those who treat women like beasts, and those who treat them like human beings. What we see today is not a clash of civilizations. Civilizations do not clash, but compete.

The Jews have come from the tragedy (of the Holocaust), and forced the world to respect them, with their knowledge, not with their terror, with their work, not their crying and yelling. Humanity owes most of the discoveries and science of the 19th and 20th centuries to Jewish scientists. 15 million people, scattered throughout the world, united and won their rights through work and knowledge. Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people, and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them.

Wafa Sultan: Islam and Mental Sanity is Impossible!

An academic book about religious attitudes to women is to be published this week despite concerns it could cause a backlash among Muslims because it criticises the prophet Muhammad for taking a nine-year-old girl as his third wife: 'Does God Hate Women' by Jeremy Stangroom and Ophelia Benson. (Times, 29.5.09). Through a gruesome catalogue of abuses carried out against women in the name of Islam as well as other major religions, including Hinduism and Catholicism, Stangroom and Benson conclude that most of the world's great faiths are essentially misogynistic. Stangroom and Benson cite extracts from a highly regarded historian of early Islam, Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, who quotes Aisha as saying: "The Messenger of God consummated his marriage with me in my house when I was nine years old". The authors conclude "religious authorities and conservative clerics worship a wretchedly cruel unjust vindictive executioner of a God. . . a God who thinks little girls should be married to grown men". In the aftermath of 9/11, the authors argue, a wave of political correctness aimed at building bridges with the Muslim world has meant accusations of "Islamophobia" have been used to silence debate about the morality of social conduct, past and present. A recent novel that also dealt with Muhammad's relationship with Aisha provoked an outcry. The Jewel of Medina caused such anger that a Muslim extremist was convicted earlier this month of trying to firebomb the office of its publisher.

Der Arzt und Journalist Ricardo Coler lebte mehr als zwei Monate bei den matriarchalisch organisierten Mosuo in Südchina. Männer besitzen dort keine Autorität, Gewalt gibt es nicht. "Männer leben besser, wo Frauen das Sagen haben." Den Mosuo-Frauen leuchtet einfach nicht ein, warum Konflikte mit Gewalt gelöst werden sollen. Das Sexualleben der Mosuo ist sehr ausgeprägt, sehr aktiv, die Partner werden häufig gewechselt. Aber die Frauen entscheiden, mit wem sie die Nacht verbringen. Heiraten oder mit einem Mann eine Familie gründen, das interessiert sie nicht. Und wenn es vorbei ist, ist es vorbei. Sie bleiben nicht zusammen wegen der Kinder oder des Geldes oder sonst etwas. Es gibt ein Wort, aber kein Konzept für das, was nach unseren Vorstellungen ein Vater sein sollte. Dessen Aufgaben übernehmen die Mutter oder die Familie. Oftmals wissen die Frauen nicht, von welchem Mann sie geschwängert wurden. Also wissen auch die Kinder nicht, wer ihr leiblicher Vater ist. (Spiegel, 27.5.09). Fotos!

• Ehegesetz in Afghanistan: "Du bist eine Hündin, keine schiitische Frau"
  Westliche Beobachter und Regierungen hatte vor allem der Teil des von Präsident Karzai bereits unterschriebenen Gesetzes schockiert, der das Sexualleben von schiitischen Ehepaaren regelt. So wird Frauen darin vorgeschrieben, alle vier Tage mit ihren Männern Sex zu haben. Frauen darf jede "unnötige" Beschäftigung verboten werden, ebenso das Haus "ohne das Einverständnis des Gatten" zu verlassen. Das neue Gesetz würde für rund 20 Prozent der Bevölkerung (bei der Volksgruppe der Hazara ) gelten.

• Protest gegen Sexpflicht: Demonstrantinnen in Kabul mit Steinen beworfen
  Bei einer Demonstration gegen das neue Ehegesetz in Afghanistan sind etwa 300 Frauen am Mittwoch in Kabul mit Steinen beworfen worden. Die Demonstrantinnen wurden laut Nachrichtenagentur AP von "mehreren tausend" männlichen und weiblichen Gegendemonstranten massiv bedrängt.

• Öffentliche Hinrichtung: Taliban erschießen junges Liebespaar
  In Afghanistan haben radikal-islamische Taliban ein junges Pärchen öffentlich hingerichtet, das versucht hatte durchzubrennen. Der 23-jährige Mann und die 19-jährige Frau wurden vor einer Moschee in der Provinz Nimros im Südwesten Afghanistans erschossen, wie der Gouverneur Ghulam Dastageer Asad am Dienstag mitteilte. Die Familie der Frau habe die beiden im Distrikt Khosh Rud aufgespürt und an die Taliban ausgeliefert, um über sie zu richten. Dort hätten drei Mullahs sie dann zur örtlichen Moschee gebracht und mit einer Fatwa, einem islamischen Rechtsgutachten, zum Tode verurteilt, sagte der Gouverneur.

• Taliban peitschen Frau in Pakistan öffentlich aus (3.4.09)
  Mit der öffentlichen Auspeitschung einer jungen Frau haben die radikal-islamischen Taliban im nordpakistanischen Swat-Tal Entsetzen in weiten Teilen des Landes ausgelöst. Fernsehsender strahlten am Freitag ein Video aus, auf dem zwei bärtige Männer die Frau auf dem Boden halten und ein dritter Mann ihr mehr als 30-mal auf den Rücken schlägt, während Zuschauer die Bestrafung schweigend beobachten.
  Taliban-Sprecher Muslim Khan sagte, die Frau habe drei Jahre lang eine Affäre mit ihrem Schwiegervater gehabt. Khan betonte, zu der jetzt per Video verbreiteten Auspeitschung sei es bereits vor dem Abkommen und der Einführung von Scharia-Gerichten gekommen, die die Frau ansonsten zum Tode verurteilt hätten. "Unter islamischen Richtern wäre sie gesteinigt worden."

"Die Vulva rettete die Welt". Einst verehrt, wurde das weibliche Genital auf ein Loch für den Penis reduziert. Die Vulva existiert nicht mehr, sagt Mithu Sanyal. Ihre nun erschienene Kulturgeschichte der Vulva soll das ändern - ein etwas anderer Beitrag zum Popfeminismus. INTERVIEW TANIA MARTINI (taz, 3.3.09). Die ältesten Darstellungen von Genitalien überhaupt sind Vulven. In den Mythologien sämtlicher Kulturkreise findet man immer wieder Geschichten, wie das selbstbestimmte Enthüllen der Vulva die Welt rettet, den Teufel vertreibt, Städte rettet etc. Später, mit dem Sieg der monotheistischen Religionen, wurde sie dann diffamiert, schließlich verleugnet.

Jutta Person: Lacan wurde kunstvoll als reaktionärer Freud enttarnt, dessen symbolische Ordnung den Phallus nur noch fester einpflanzte. In dieser Tradition steht Mithu M. Sanyals neue Kulturgeschichte der Vulva: Im kollektiven Gedächtnis sei das weibliche Geschlecht nach wie vor eine Leerstelle - ein Loch eben, das von Lacan als Mangel definiert wurde. Anders als die sexuell vermeintlich so informierte Gegenwart hatten frühere Kulturen ein ausgeprägtes Verhältnis zu den weiblichen Genitalien. Die Vulva - der äußere, sichtbare Teil der primären weiblichen Geschlechtsorgane - besteht aus Venushügel, Klitoris, äußeren und inneren Schamlippen, dem Eingang zur Vagina und Damm; dass das nicht nichts ist, scheint offensichtlich, und dennoch wurde sie jahrhundertelang verdrängt. Die Zurschaustellung der Vulva war einmal eine rituelle Geste, die Heilung, Schutz oder Abschreckung bewirkte: Das Heben der Röcke brachte die Saat zum Wachsen, beruhigte das stürmische Meer oder schlug böse Geister in die Flucht. Die Geschichte dieser umkämpften Körperzone reicht von den antiken Baubo-Mythen über keltische Göttinnen bis zu den steinernen Nonnen des 13. Jahrhunderts, die ihre Vulva hervorstreckten: "Bis ins späte Mittelalter wurden Statuen von nackten Frauen mit gespreizten Beinen an heiligen Stätten, wie Klöstern oder Kirchen, angebracht und bewachten die Stadttore." A 35,000-year-old ivory carving of a busty woman found in a German cave may be the oldest known sculpture of the human form, according to archeologists who unveiled it Wednesday. The carving, found in six fragments in Germany's Hohle Fels cave, depicts a woman with a swollen belly, wide-set thighs and large, protruding breasts. (CBC, 5/14/09).

Der "Freiheitskampf" der PKK führt die Kurden in die Sackgasse: Die Guerilla bringt den Menschen weder politische Rechte noch kulturelle Identität, sondern Terror und archaische Sitten, sagt die Soziologin Necla Kelek. Um das zu ändern, muss sich etwas bewegen - auch beim türkischen Staat.
Die feudale Stammesgesellschaft existiert bis heute und die Kurden leben trotz der Reformen durch die Republik ihre archaischen Sitten. Es ist eine patriarchalische Gesellschaft, die Frauen als Besitz und Arbeitskräfte sieht und ihnen die Grundrechte verweigert. In den von Kurden bewohnten Gebieten sind Blutrache, Verbrechen im Namen der Ehre, Gewalt gegen Frauen an der Tagesordnung. ... Demokratie und Zivilgesellschaft scheinen für große Teile der tribalen kurdischen Gesellschaft keine Option zu sein. Sie führen ihren Kampf mit terroristischen Mitteln einer Stammesguerilla, die politische Ideologie ist die von Stalinisten.(Spiegel, 15.7.08).

Taliban execute two Afghan women

Two Afghan women have been shot dead by Taleban militants in the country's central Ghazni province. Taleban fighters told the Associated Press that the women had been operating a prostitution ring for American soldiers and foreign contractors. They also claimed that the women had been working for the local police. A spokesman for the Ghazni governor said the dead women were "innocent local people". Sayed Ismal, a spokesman for Ghazni's governor, Sher Khostai, told Agence France Presse that the women, killed late on Saturday, had no connection with the government. The US has also dismissed the allegations. US military spokesman 1st Lt Nathan Perry said he had never heard of "anything close to that nature"(13.7.08).

Afghan Athlete Seeks Asylum in Europe. Mehboba Ahdyar was to be the poster-child for the Olympics but the 19-year-old Afghan runner ran away from an Italian training camp last week. The 19-year-old from Kabul was to be the only female athlete representing Afghanistan in this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing. But being in the international spotlight had attracted the wrong kind of attention. Although Ahdyar always ran in a headscarf and wore long tracksuit bottoms she still received death threats from extremists who objected to a Muslim woman taking part in sports at all. When she received visits from Western media earlier this year, her neighbors called the police telling them she was obviously a prostitute working for foreign clients. Her father, a carpenter, even spent time in jail until the issue was cleared up. She said she was scared of reprisals because of her sports career. Her parents are now reportedly under pressure from members of the Afghan Olympic Committee, who say that if she does not come back they will be held responsible and could be thrown in jail. REGINA MÖNCH: Bitte nicht übers Kopftuch klügeln! Die beiden Gender-Forscherinnen Christina von Braun und Bettina Mathes erzählen in ihrem Buch "Verschleierte Wirklichkeit. Die Frau, der Islam und der Westen" (Aufbau Verlag, Berlin 2007. 476 S., geb., 24,90 €) die Geschichte des muslimischen Schleiers neu. Für sie ist es keine Geschichte der Unterdrückung der Frau in islamischen Gesellschaften, sondern die der westlichen Frau, die bei uns verdrängt und deshalb auf die Muslima projiziert worden sei. Kopftuchgegner würden demnach nur das abgespaltene Eigene im anderen, im Orient suchen. Ihre Entrüstung über den Kapitalismus und seine abgefeimte Männerideologie erreicht Höchstform, wenn sich die Autorinnen über Kritik an Zwangsheiraten muslimischer Frauen mokieren und ein vermeintliches Schweigen zum Frauenhandel in Europa und dem Sextourismus als Anklage dagegenhalten. Die beiden Verfasserinnen meinen ihre Apologie des Schamtuchs politisch und betonen dies unermüdlich, inklusive eines irritierenden Verständnisses für die Empörung über die "Verunglimpfung des Islams" wegen der Mohammed-Karikaturen, deren inszenierter Kampagnencharakter ihnen bis heute nicht klargeworden ist. Sie machen Alice Schwarzer genauso nieder wie Angela Merkel; die eine, weil sie die Trennung von Staat und Religion als Errungenschaft der Aufklärung verteidigt, die andere, weil sie ihr Leitkulturzwang unterstellen, der ihnen aber für islamische Länder totalitärer Ausprägung keinen Nebensatz wert ist. Überhaupt wird alles ignoriert, was Eigensinn und Emanzipation in Europa hervorgebracht haben. Genauso wenig erfahren wir in diesem Buch, was es denn ist, das so viele Menschen aus dem Orient immer noch in den Okzident zieht. ...Wenn in Europa ernsthaft über den Islam gestritten wird, geht es nicht um Glaubensverbote für Minderheiten oder die Kleiderordnung, sondern einzig allein um die Unteilbarkeit der Menschenrechte, die mit der islamischen Scharia und ihren Vorschriften unvereinbar sind. Das Vaterbild deutscher Männer (2.7.08). Man muss sich allmählich darüber klar werden, dass die Unterstellung, allein von Männern gehe Gewalt aus, dem grandiosen Zweck dient, Frauen davon freizusprechen, dass sie im Dritten Reich etwas mit Gewalt, mit Antisemitismus, mit Unterdrückung und Holocaust zu tun hatten oder einfach System tragende Mitläufer gewesen seien. Die heute noch wirksame Idealisierung der deutschen Frau als Mutter ist die Plombe, mit der die Teilhabe der Frauen am Nationalsozialismus wie ein böser Geist in der Flasche gehalten wird.

Der Konflikt um "neuen Feminismus" eskaliert: Nach zwei Monaten streicht Lisa Ortgies bei der "Emma" die Segel. Und erhält einen Tritt von Alice Schwarzer persönlich - die auch gleich wieder das Steuer übernimmt (taz, 31.5.08). Die Liaison dauerte keine zwei Monate. Und endet mit einem gehörigen Tritt für für die kurzzeitige Emma-Chefredakteurin Lisa Ortgies: "Zu unserem Bedauern eignet sich die Kollegin nicht für die umfassende Verantwortung einer Chefredakteurin", heißt es in der Pressemitteilung.

Ines Kappert: Von 68 lernen heißt, zu begreifen - Klaus Theweleit hat unlängst darauf hingewiesen, wie eine Generation obsessiv nach einer neuen Sprache gesucht hat, um sich selbst neu zu erfinden. Es gelte, Politik ohne Feind zu machen. Das bedeutet: Der Blick heftet sich nicht mehr an den Gegner und macht ihn nicht mehr zum Maßstab aller Dinge. Erst dann, endlich, kann sich die Diskussion wieder um Sachfragen kümmern. Erst dann können Wege erkundet werden, um die Geschlechterdemokratisierung zu befördern, damit die Kategorie Geschlecht künftig nicht mehr den gesellschaftlichen Platz zuweist. Vor drei Jahren wurde Hatun Sürücü in Berlin von ihrem Bruder erschossen (Spiegel, 7.2.08). Im August 2007 hob der Bundesgerichtshof (BGH) in Leipzig die Freisprüche der Sürücü-Brüder Mutlu und Alpaslan wieder auf. Das Verfahren muss nun neu verhandelt werden. Aber nach einem Bericht des Berliner "Tagesspiegel" weigert sich Mutlu, zum Prozess aus der Türkei nach Deutschland zu kommen. Es ist anzunehmen, dass gegen die beiden Verdächtigen internationaler Haftbefehl erlassen wird. Einen neuen Termin für die Verhandlungen gibt es bislang nicht.

Johanna Schmeller: Penthesilea und ihre tödlichen Schwestern. Die Amazonen (die verbreitete etymologische Ableitung: a-mazos = brustlos). waren wild, grausam, kriegerisch. Sie schnitten sich die rechte Brust ab, um besser Pfeile schießen zu können. Die mythischen Frauen verachteten das stolz alles Männliche, doch wurden sie von den Griechen vergöttert. Jetzt geht ein Forscher der Legende nach und deckt Wahrheiten auf. Mit "Amazonen: Frauen, Kämpferinnen, Städtegründerinnen" legt der Berliner Archäologe Jochen Fornasier jetzt einen reich illustrierte Studie vor, die sich der geschichtswissenschaftlichen Aufarbeitung der Amazonensage und ihrem Nachwirken widmet. Fornasier liest die historische Texte neu und leistet eine eigene Interpretation, gelegentlich auch jenseits der etablierten Lehrmeinung. (Welt, 9.4.08).

Ayaan Hirsi Ali: Islam’s Silent Moderates (NYT, 7.12.07): Where are the Muslim voices raised over the terrible injustice of incidents like these? How many Muslims are willing to stand up and say, in the case of the girl from Qatif, that this manner of justice is appalling, brutal and bigoted — and that no matter who said it was the right thing to do, and how long ago it was said, this should no longer be done? When a “moderate” Muslim’s sense of compassion and conscience collides with matters prescribed by Allah, he should choose compassion. Unless that happens much more widely, a moderate Islam will remain wishful thinking.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the former Dutch lawmaker who began receiving death threats in 2004, when she criticized political Islam, and later left for the United States, asked the European Union to pay for her round-the-clock protection while in the United States, saying that Europe had a responsibility to defend freedom of expression. Last year, the Dutch government said it would no longer pay for bodyguards while she is abroad. NYT, 15.2.08.
