Castro repeatedly returned to his excoriation of anti-Semitism. He criticized Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust and explained why the Iranian government would better serve the cause of peace by acknowledging the "unique" history of anti-Semitism and trying to understand why Israelis fear for their existence. He said the Iranian government should understand the consequences of theological anti-Semitism. "This went on for maybe two thousand years," he said. "I don't think anyone has been slandered more than the Jews. I would say much more than the Muslims. They have been slandered much more than the Muslims because they are blamed and slandered for everything. No one blames the Muslims for anything." The Iranian government should understand that the Jews "were expelled from their land, persecuted and mistreated all over the world, as the ones who killed God. In my judgment here's what happened to them: Reverse selection. What's reverse selection? Over 2,000 years they were subjected to terrible persecution and then to the pogroms. One might have assumed that they would have disappeared; I think their culture and religion kept them together as a nation." He continued: "The Jews have lived an existence that is much harder than ours. There is nothing that compares to the Holocaust." I asked him if he would tell Ahmadinejad what he was telling me. "I am saying this so you can communicate it," he answered. I admit, also surprised to hear him express such sympathy for Jews, and for Israel's right to exist (which he endorsed unequivocally).

Chavez has been a close ally of Iran and a strong critic of Israel. He severed ties with Israel in January 2009 to protest its actions in the Gaza Strip. A series of recent incidents have ignited concerns about anti-Semitic violence in Venezuela. The Chavez remarks came one day after Jeff Goldberg wrote on this blog about his recent reporting trip to Havana and his conversations with Fidel Castro. Jeff reports that, according to people he has been in touch with overnight, Chavez's new rhetoric and willingness to meet with Jewish leaders is "a direct result of Fidel's statement."

British policies towards Israel. Britain has never been much more than a fair-weather friend to Jewish national aspirations.
There was the notorious 1939 White Paper, which severely limited Jewish immigration into Palestine at precisely the period of their greatest need, during the Final Solution. A total upper limit of 75,000 Jewish immigrants was set for the fateful years 1940-44, a figure that was also intended to cover refugee emergencies. The White Paper was published on 9 November 1938 - the very same day as the Kristallnacht atrocities in Germany - and was approved by Parliament in May 1939, a full two months after Hitler’s occupation of the rump of Czechoslovakia. The Manchester Guardian described it as ‘a death sentence on tens of thousands of Central European Jews’, which in sheer numerical terms was probably an underestimation. Although the Labour Party Conference voted to repeal the White Paper in 1945, the Labour Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin -- a bitter enemy of Israel - persisted in it, and it was not to be repealed until the day after the State of Israel was proclaimed.

The Turkish charity that led the flotilla involved in a deadly Israeli raid has extensive connections with Turkey’s political elite, and the group’s efforts to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza received support at the top levels of the governing party, Turkish diplomats and government officials said. ...The charity’s mission, political analysts said, has advanced Mr. Erdogan’s aim of shifting Turkey’s focus to the Muslim east when its prospects for joining the European Union are dim. The government “could have stopped the ship if it wanted to, but the mission to Gaza served both the I.H.H. and the government by making both heroes at home and in the Arab world,” said Ercan Citlioglu, a terrorism expert at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul.

 Germany banned the IHH charity’s offices, citing its support for Hamas, which Germany considers a terrorist organization. Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière said the charity abused donors’ good intentions “to support a terrorist organization with money supposedly donated for charitable purposes.” The newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung said that from 2007 the charity collected $8.5 million and transferred money to six smaller organizations, two belonging directly to Hamas and four with close ties to it. Richard Cohen: Israel has its faults, but apartheid isn't one of them. (WP, 3/2/10). The Israel of today and the South Africa of yesterday have almost nothing in common. In South Africa, the minority white population harshly ruled the majority black population. Nonwhites were denied civil rights, and in 1958, they were even deprived of citizenship. In contrast, Israeli Arabs, about one-fifth of the country, have the same civil and political rights as do Israeli Jews. Arabs sit in the Knesset and serve in the military, although most are exempt from the draft. Whatever this is -- and it looks suspiciously like a liberal democracy -- it cannot be apartheid.

Israel wird angegriffen. Auf verschiedenen Ebenen wird weltweit versuch, diesen Staat als unrechtmäßig zu erklären: Gewerkschaften verlangen wirtschaftliche Sanktionen gegen Israel, akademische Institutionen rufen zum Boykott israelischer Universitäten und Professoren auf, israelischen Sportlern wird das Recht zur Teilnahme an Veranstaltungen verweigert, die Medien der Welt konzentrieren sich zwanghaft auf Israel, doch die Berichte sind oft tendenziös und einseitig. Die Vereinten Nationen verbringen mehr Zeit damit, Israel zu kritisieren, als irgendein anderes Land.
Kein anderer Staat wird so behandelt. Israel wird verteufelt, obwohl es doch das einzige demokratische Land im Nahen Osten ist, in dem Menschenrechte, Rechtsstaatlichkeit, freie Religionsausübung und Pressefreiheit respektiert werden. Auch 62 Jahre nach seiner Gründung wird es Israel verwehrt, in Frieden und Sicherheit zu existieren. Sogar Israels Recht, sich gegen terroristische Angriffe zu verteidigen, wird in Frage gestellt.

I ask you to not be carried away by that statement. That does not mean the policy is right.” “The question is what is going to happen in the future. There is a difference in opinion between Israel and the United States government. The U.S. believes that the Palestinians are ready to build their own state, and they will be able to rule over the Palestinians, including Hamas. The Israelis are saying they don’t think they are ready. I believe that Israel has a concern over that. I don’t know how it can be resolved.”

US-Senator  Chuck Schumer: Obama's 'counter-productive' Israel policy 'has to stop' (Politico, 4/22/10).
I talked to Rahm Emanuel about, and the President about this week. I told the President, I told Rahm Emanuel and others in the administration that I thought the policy they took to try to bring about negotiations is counter-productive, because when you give the Palestinians hope that the United States will do its negotiating for them, they are not going to sit down and talk. Palestinians don’t really believe in a state of Israel, they, unlike a majority of Israelis, who have come to the conclusion that they can live with a 2-state solution to be determined by the parties, the majority of Palestinians are still very reluctant, and they need to be pushed to get there. If the U.S. says certain things and takes certain stands the Palestinians say, “Why should we negotiate?” You have to show the Palestinians that they are not going to get their way by just sitting back and not giving in, and not recognizing that there is a state of Israel.

The Anti-Defamation League expressed dismay on Saturday evening at Washington’s “public dressing-down of Israel” over new housing in east Jerusalem. "We are shocked and stunned at the administration’s tone and public dressing-down of Israel on the issue of future building in Jerusalem,” ADL’s National Director Abe Foxman said in a statement. Es war das Unglück des Zionismus, daß seine Revolution nur ungleichzeitig sein konnte, aber noch mehr, daß sie die bürgerliche Revolution der Juden darstellt. Aber jede große Revolution, die ihren Namen verdient, findet ihre Konterrevolution, ihre Vendée. In diesem Sinne war Hitler der erste Djihadist, und ein kluger Beobachter wie Winston Churchill kam, auf die Frage, was für ein Buch denn „Mein Kampf“ sei, darauf, es sei dies „der neue Koran“ für Deutsche. Das Leid der Palästinenser und das Elend ihrer vermeintlichen Freunde. In der Charta der Hamas ist zu lesen: "Das jüngste Gericht wird nicht kommen, solange Moslems nicht die Juden bekämpfen und sie töten. Dann aber werden sich die Juden hinter Steinen und Bäumen verstecken, und die Steine und Bäume werden rufen: 'Oh Moslem, ein Jude versteckt sich hinter mir, komm' und töte ihn.'" und: "Friedensinitiativen und so genannte Friedensideen oder internationale Konferenzen widersprechen dem Grundsatz der Islamischen Widerstandsbewegung… Für das Palästina-Problem gibt es keine andere Lösung als den Jihad. Einen Bärendienst erweist den PalästinenserInnen allerdings die hiesige „Palästina-Solidaritätsszene“, indem sie den Terror verharmlost und die Illusion eines palästinensischen Staates anstelle Israels nährt. Shulamit Aloni: Sadly, Israel is no longer democratic (Haaretz, 5/9/09). (deutsch bei zmag.de). "Wir leben in einer Ethnokratie nach ‚jüdischen und demokratischen’ Regeln. 1970 war entschieden worden, dass in Israel Religion und Nationalität ein und dasselbe seien ( weil wir im Personenregister nicht als Israelis, sondern als Juden registriert sind). 1992 war im Basic Law on Human Dignitiy und Liberty ( Grundgesetz für menschliche Würde und Freiheit) bestimmt worden, dass Israel ein ‘jüdischer Staat’ ist. In diesem Gesetz wird das Versprechen, das in der Unabhängigkeitserklärung erscheint, nicht mehr erwähnt: ‚Der Staat Israel wird zum Wohle aller seiner Bürger sorgen… er wird allen Bürger ohne Unterschied von Religion, Rasse und Geschlecht volle soziale und politischen Gleichberechtigung gewähren.“ Die Knesset ratifizierte das Gesetz trotzdem...."

Thomas L. Friedman: The 5-state solution. The virtues of this five-state solution — Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Saudi Arabia — are numerous: Egypt and Jordan, the Arab states that have peace treaties with Israel, would act as transition guarantors that any Israeli withdrawal would not leave a security vacuum in the West Bank, Gaza or Arab Jerusalem that could threaten Israel. (NYT, 1/27/09).

Charles Krauthammer: The Hamas 'Peace' Gambit (WP, 5/8/09) The Times conducted a five-hour interview with Hamas leader Khaled Meshal at his Damascus headquarters.Mirabile dictu, they're offering a peace plan with a two-state solution. Except. The offer is not a peace but a truce that expires after 10 years. Meaning that after Israel has fatally weakened itself by settling millions of hostile Arab refugees in its midst, and after a decade of Hamas arming itself within a Palestinian state that narrows Israel to eight miles wide -- Hamas restarts the war against a country it remains pledged to eradicate.

Richard Cohen: The Tactics of Thugs - Hamas's Bloody Hands. (WP, 4/21/09). Some residents of Gaza were taken from their homes and shot in the legs or feet. Some were brutally beaten, and some were simply murdered, sometimes after hideous torture. If you are expecting -- based on everything that has happened -- that the awful Israelis did this, guess again. It was Hamas, the authentic and genuine government of Gaza. The information about the shootings is taken from a report issued yesterday by Human Rights Watch. It says that "Hamas security forces or masked gunmen believed to be with Hamas" executed 18 people, most of whom were accused of collaborating with Israel, sparing the expense and bother of a trial. Others were shot, maimed or beaten, not for allegedly collaborating with the enemy -- or, as is often the case, having a house or woman that a snitch covets -- but for belonging to the opposition political party, Fatah. Many of these murders and assaults took place during Israel's recent pummeling of Gaza. Yet, as Human Rights Watch goes to some pains to document, at no time did Hamas's security forces lose control of Gaza, so the murders and maimings were not a consequence of chaos but of government policy. Whatever the case, the murders, shootings and beatings continued even after the hostilities ended. Since then, at least 14 more people have been executed extrajudicially, which is to say murdered. Some were also tortured. You can only imagine what would happen if Israel dealt with its internal political enemies or dissenters in such a fashion.... Read the Hamas charter, a charter that, in part, reads like it could have been written by Hitler. It is not some uplifting cry of a downtrodden people seeking its freedom but a repellent anti-Semitic screed. It sees the Jews behind every major world event since the storming of the Bastille: "They were behind the French revolution, the communist revolution and most of the revolutions we heard and hear about, here and there. With their money they formed secret societies, such as Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, the Lions . . . for the purpose of sabotaging societies and achieving Zionist interests." The Rotary? The Lions? Why not Welcome Wagon?

"Es ist schon eine ganz nette Hitlergemeinde hier." Das Gelobte Land eine Nazi-Hochburg? Genau. Vor 1939 war jeder dritte deutsche Siedler in Palästina Mitglied der NSDAP, die Hitler-Jugend von Haifa bot Hebräisch-Kurse an. Nach dem Krieg mussten die Palästina-Deutschen weichen - und wurden von Israel finanziell entschädigt. Von Ralf Balke (et, 13.5.2009). Die Jahre vor Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges boten so gelegentlich Szenen wie aus einem absurden Theaterstück an. So forderten die Araber in den Unruhejahren zwischen 1936 und 1939 beim Passieren der von ihnen kontrollierten Gebiete explizit die Hakenkreuzfahne als Erkennungszeichen an deutschen Autos, um Verwechslungen mit Juden oder Briten zu vermeiden....

Le philosophe Robert Redeker juge que les manifestations contre l'offensive israélienne à Gaza du week-end dernier étaient loin d'être pacifistes. (Le Figaro, 13.1.09). Comme à chaque fois, le pacifisme tel qu'il s'exprime dans la rue témoigne moins d'une volonté de paix que du désir du triomphe de l'un des camps, ici celui du Hamas. Rien de pacifiste dans tous ces éléments, qui ne témoignent pas d'une volonté de paix mais d'une double volonté différente, même si elle est implicite : la victoire du Hamas, l'écrasement d'Israël. Nous sommes bien loin de Mai 68, qui réclamait la liberté, qui exaltait des valeurs incompatibles pour la plupart avec l'islam : hier, à des années-lumière de l'Odéon 1968, des barricades du Quartier latin, la rue française ressemblait à la rue du monde arabe en émoi, celle de l'Égypte par exemple, où d'ailleurs se déroulaient les mêmes manifestations, leurs clones, avec les mêmes drapeaux et les mêmes slogans.

Über die Vernichtung Israels hinaus bemüht sich die Hamas um die weltweite Verfolgung von Juden und Christen, da diese dem Propheten nicht geglaubt und damit ihren Schutz durch Allah verwirkt hätten: „Unterwerfung ist ihr Los … Sie haben Allahs Zorn auf sich geladen und wurden verworfen, weil sie Allahs Zeichen leugneten, zu Unrecht die Propheten töteten, den Gehorsam verweigerten und sündigten“ (Koran, Sure 3, Vers 110 ff.). Mit Juden und Christen könne es daher grundsätzlich kein Einverständnis geben (Sure 2, Vers 120). In der Hamas herrscht eine Mentalität, an der auch die bereitwilligsten westlichen Dialogfreunde scheitern müssen. Aus der tiefen koranischen Verankerung der Kampfziele der Hamas ergibt sich ihre totale Unansprechbarkeit für politische Verhandlungen. „Es gibt keine Lösung für die palästinensische Frage außer durch den Dschihad“, heißt es in der Charta (Artikel 13), auch dies unter Berufung auf Koran- und Hadith-Stellen. „Initiativen, Vorschläge und internationale Konferenzen sind Zeitverschwendung und sinnlose Mühen.“ Seit 2007 herrscht die Hamas über Gaza, seit sie bei Wahlen die Mehrheit gewann (wobei niemand für die Rechtmäßigkeit dieser Wahlen einstehen kann). Entscheidendend für ihren Triumph waren die Korruption der Palästinensischen Autonomiebehörde und das Netzwerk sozialer Einrichtungen, das die Hamas – dank reicher ausländischer Spenden – für seine Kämpfer und ihre Familien unterhält. Sie beseitigte die Anhänger der rivalisierenden Fatach-Bewegung in Massakern. Mit Todeslisten gingen die Hamas-Kämpfer von Haus zu Haus, Unliebsame wurden auf offener Straße exekutiert, von Dächern gestoßen oder in den Miliz-Stationen zu Tode gefoltert. Hunderte Fatach-Leute flüchteten im Sommer 2007 mit Frauen und Kindern in die Arme des „zionistischen Feindes“ und belagerten die Grenzübergänge nach Israel, um nicht in die Hand ihrer muslimischen Brüder von der Hamas zu fallen. Auch jetzt, während der Militäroffensive Israels, nimmt sich die Hamas Zeit, ihre palästinensischen Rivalen auszuschalten: 35 führende Fatach-Leute wurden, Medienberichten zufolge, sofort nach Beginn der israelischen Bodenoffensive am 2. und 3. Januar 2009 von der Hamas liquidiert, weitere 75 in die Beine geschossen oder anders verkrüppelt, um sie an jeglicher Aktivität, auch Fluchtmöglichkeit, zu hindern.

Fatah cracks down on Hamas in W. Bank (JP, 15.1.09)

DAVID E. SANGER (NYT, 1/10/09): U.S. Rejected Aid for Israeli Raid on Iranian Nuclear Site. The Bush administration was particularly alarmed by an Israeli request to fly over Iraq to reach Iran’s major nuclear complex at Natanz, where the country’s only known uranium enrichment plant is located. The White House denied that request outright, American officials said, and the Israelis backed off their plans, at least temporarily. But the tense exchanges also prompted the White House to step up intelligence-sharing with Israel and brief Israeli officials on new American efforts to subtly sabotage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, a major covert program that Mr. Bush is about to hand off to President-elect Barack Obama. Early in 2008, the Israeli government signaled that it might be preparing to take matters into its own hands. In a series of meetings, Israeli officials asked Washington for a new generation of powerful bunker-busters, far more capable of blowing up a deep underground plant than anything in Israel’s arsenal of conventional weapons. They asked for refueling equipment that would allow their aircraft to reach Iran and return to Israel. And they asked for the right to fly over Iraq. Mr. Bush deflected the first two requests, pushing the issue off, but “we said ‘hell no’ to the overflights,” one of his top aides said. At the White House and the Pentagon, there was widespread concern that a political uproar in Iraq about the use of its American-controlled airspace could result in the expulsion of American forces from the country.

Hamas executes collaborators and restricts Fatah movement. By Amira Hass (Haaretz, 8.1.09).
Prime targets include Fatah members, people convicted or suspected of collaborating with Israel, and "common" criminals. Estimates of the number of suspects executed range from 40 to 80. Executions are carried out secretly. In Rafah, for example, at least some of the victims were killed in a caravan erected in the area formerly occupied by the Rafiah Yam settlement, and the victims' relatives were invited to take away the bodies.

Lauderdale, Florida, chanted "Nuke, nuke Israel!" and carried placards accusing Israel of "ethnic cleansing" and bearing such messages as: "Did Israel take notes during the Holocaust? Happy Hanukkah." To the dozen or so supporters of Israel gathered across the street, one demonstrator shouted: "Murderers! Go back to the ovens! You need a big oven."

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Republican, condemned a proposed United Nations resolution equating Israel's response to the Hamas attacks. The Security Council ``has taken no meaningful action to stop this onslaught or condemn those Palestinian militants responsible for these assaults on Israel. Now, after the democratic Jewish state of Israel was forced to respond to protect its citizens, the council is moving to equate Israel's calibrated self-defense measures with Hamas' actions that threaten not just Israel but regional peace and security.'' Rep. Alcee Hastings, Democrat: ``Hamas is not only an impediment to peace between Israel and the Palestinians, but also to Israel's efforts to establish normal diplomatic relations with many in the Arab world.''Sen. Mel Martinez, Republican: ``Israel has a right to defend itself and its citizens. Terrorist organizations like Hamas cannot be allowed safe haven in any territory.'' Rep. Robert Wexler, Democrat: ``It is unconscionable for anyone to expect the Israeli government or any other government, for that matter, to sit idly as thousands of deadly rockets rain down on their cities.'' Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democrat: ``Israel, like all sovereign nations, has not only a right but, moreover, an obligation to ensure the safety and security of her citizens. ``We would not allow our government to stand idly by as hundreds of rockets and mortars came crashing down on the heads of our citizens.'' The key point is that in rejecting partition, demanding everything, and starting a war it could not win, the Arab side ensured endless conflict, the Palestinian refugee issue, and no Palestine. It wasn't murder it was suicide.
